Amino acids are the building blocks of the body. Of the twenty amino acids, the human body is only capable of manufacturing ten. The other half, referred to as essential amino acids, must be taken in through food on a daily basis as the body does not store excess. Since inadequate levels of even a single one can interfere with proper function of the body, some people choose to use an amino acid supplement.
The ten amino acids that the body can produce are referred to as nonessential. They include alanine, aspartic acid, asparagine, cysteine, glutamine, glutamic acid, glycine, serine, proline, and tyrosine. Tyrosine is unique in that while it can be produced by the body, it does require phenylalanine to do so. If there are inadequate levels of phenylalanine, then tyrosine will need to be received through food or supplementation.
The other ten, called essential amino acids, are arginine, histidine, leucine, isoleucine, lysine, phenylalanine, methionine, tryptophan, threonine, and valine. As we age, arginine becomes less necessary for body function. However, it is vitally important in youth.
When there are not enough amino acids in the body, it can have widespread effects. Insomnia; poor skin, hair, nail, joint and tendon health; low energy levels and decreased immune function are just a few of the problems associated with low production of the nonessential amino acids. Tyrosine is a precursor to many of the neurotransmitters found in the brain, including dopamine.
In most cases, an amino acid supplement focuses more on the essential amino acids as they need to be taken in daily to maintain levels. These acids are needed for sleep, muscle growth and repair, fat metabolism, liver health, fertility, bone health and detoxification of the body. They also play are required for the production of red and white blood cells, hemoglobin, clotting factors, hormones, enzymes and antibodies.
Amino acids can be taken a few ways. Some people choose to only supplement the ones they do not receive in food. Others choose formulas which include the acids, but nothing else. Many choose a product that combines them with vitamins, minerals and other substances essential for health.
An amino acid supplement that is combined with other essentials is a good choice. With some vitamins and minerals, an amino acid is needed for proper absorption or use. Likewise, some amino acids require a vitamin or mineral to properly work in the body.
There are some supplements available that combine acids, vitamins and minerals. Some products go a step further and add herbs, enzymes or specialty nutrients. Xtend-Life Total Balance is one such product.
